Searchlight (full album)

"Searchlight", Only Son's second album, finds songwriter Jack Dishel blasting off in search of new lands. Over the course of twelve songs (thirteen if you find the hidden treasure) we're taken on a world tour of thoughts and moods; there are dreamy songs, trash rockers, sci-fi lullabies, gypsy warnings and philosophical stompers. Each song is a mini-epic - but lucky for us, our tour guide loves pop. With thoughtful lyrics, intricately fun arrangements and choruses that are catchy as hell, "Searchlight" is a record we're lucky to find.

The album was co-produced & mixed by Jack's lifelong friend Eddie "Pull" Frente (of the band kHz). Guest musicians include Regina Spektor, members of The Strokes, Little Joy, Kishi Bashi, & Robbers On High Street.

Digital download of Searchlight includes bonus track "Kick 'Em Out" featuring Fabrizio Moretti (The Strokes/LIttle Joy) and Binki Shapiro (Little Joy)! Not available anywhere else! And bonus download of the guitar chords to each song.

Immediate download of 13 track album in your choice of 320k mp3, FLAC, or just about any other format you could possibly desire.

Magic 03:34
MAGIC Magic It’s magic till you know how it works Nobody wants to see how you do it The secret is all that you’re worth So they smile and clap right through it It took so many years to plan And just a second to do To open up my hand And show everything to you Magic It’s magic when you know how it works ‘cause even if you find the location You know all the numbers and words But you’ll never guess the combination It takes so long to understand and just a second to do And if you figure out which hand I’ll give everything to you Magic Don't show me how you do it

Searchlight 03:13
SEARCHLIGHT I was outta my mind and I didn't wanna answer the door They tried again a couple of times but I didn't wanna know any more Something here don't seem right Trouble around me, trouble around me Sun feels like a searchlight Trouble around me, trouble around me Something here don't seem right Trouble around me, trouble around me Sun feels like a searchlight Trouble around me, trouble around me I was stuck in a line so I made a little bed on the floor Just looking for a one of a kind but I couldn't wait around any more Creeping through the dark night No one around me, no one around me Sleeping through the daylight No one around me, no one around me Something here don't seem right Trouble around me, trouble around me Sun feels like a searchlight Trouble around me, trouble around me What could make it feel right Trouble around me, trouble around me What could make it real life Trouble around me, trouble around me

It's A Boy 03:05
IT'S A BOY "Let's start with the baby's gender. Do you know what you both want?" "Well, we discussed it and we're pretty sure we'd like to have a boy." "OK, that's fine..." "6'2" with perfect vision, good teeth and even skin. Block the addiction gene and quarantine his temper if you can..." "OK, we'll see..." "He needs a homing chip put deep inside his wrist in case somebody tries to steal our little prince..." "You're not the first in line and I don't have a lot of time. If you look, I'm sure you wouldn't mind to pick one of our stock designs. I'll leave it with you..." "He shouldn't have to go to school like all those people off the grid. He needs a good head start like every single other normal kid. I'm sure we'll find a way to pay... He needs a humor chip, put it second on the list - for when he's old enough to realize where he is. And if we can't afford to give him what he's worth just make sure that he's strong enough to work..." "You're not the first in line and I'm running out of time. I can recommend a friend of mine who deals with our low budget line. But if you want to make him right, so he has a better life, you can sign us back his human rights and get him now for half the price. It's a pretty good deal..."

Solo Mission 03:06
SOLO MISSION You know I didn't even try, just sat there I figured it would happen by itself And I didn't even mind, yeah until I was alone up on the shelf with the medicine "This could've been anyone's life..." Empty space always there to take your place Solo mission, no matter how many friends Solo mission from beginning to end, I know Sick of sitting on the side, just watching and taking it like everybody else and now I'm running out of time, yeah I didn't listen til I heard it go missing It's getting dark in your eyes No escape, the tornado taking shape Solo mission No matter how many friends Solo mission from beginning to end, I know Solo mission, even if you came along Empty space always there to take your place Solo mission, no matter what we pretend Solo mission from beginning to end, I know Solo mission, even if you came along even if you came along even if you came along

THE SAME TWO PLACES You were running out of believers living underground where there's no one to keep you down Wouldn't listen to your innocent girl you were falling out of love with the world going back and forth between the same two places And is it all a waste of time you can't decide And is it only in your mind you can't decide You were running out of believers in another town watching the leaves turn brown Tunnel vision to the end of the world you were falling out of love with a girl No place feels like home you're quiet on the phone she wants to know what's wrong And all the people on the train should know your name by now but they don't And is it all a waste of time you can't decide And is it only in your mind you can't decide

Someone 03:00
SOMEONE I was laying in a parking lot You were praying on a mountain top Til nothing felt the same Hold my shoes, let me walk the coals Television full of bullet holes But still I can’t forget my name You gotta be someone, somewhere, sometime you gotta be someone, somewhere, sometime Let me out, I want to feel the cold Gotta borrow back what I sold Don’t really need what I’ve been after Spent time with a lunatic he told me that you never get used to it but if you listen close you hear the laughter And it’ll take you so much time To get nothing on your mind You gotta be someone, somewhere, sometime You gotta be someone, somewhere, sometime

All Is Holy 03:25
ALL IS HOLY This song's called All Is Holy because I want it to be true Today I spent the whole day doing things that I don't wanna do And I know that no one owns me but still I'm in this place Feel like a slave who's never seen his master's face And even if the door swung open would I go Would I turn right back inside I don't know This song's called All Is Holy even if it isn't true Won't anybody show me a way to make it all feel new And I know that no one owes me and people got it worse but still it feels like I'm just kneeling in the dirt waiting for the word And even if I heard it come would I know Would I make it out alive I don't know

CALL THEM BROTHERS That's it, it's split, it won't recover Just frame the halves and call them brothers Find your fathers and your mothers If you remember who they are Over and over they call us their friends Can't we find something else to pretend? Like nobody's won and we're safe at the end In the darkness the film machine's spinning So let's leave it on We'll be out in the street before anyone knows that we're gone That's it, it's split, it can't recover Just frame the halves and call them a whole And chip at the bricks and fill up your pockets With the pieces of the wall that you stole The hunt is on, everyone's chasing Everyone's chasing a shot A shot rings out, nobody wants it Nobody wants it to stop That's it, it's split, it won't recover Just frame the halves and call them brothers Find your fathers and your mothers If you remember who they are If you remember, if you remember, if you remember who they are

YOU STAYED AT HOME You stayed at home I went to school in a crowd of decimals said we’re indivisible traced a picture of a mule You stayed at home I went to work in a brand new collared shirt through the field of monuments ran my fingers through the dirt can’t remember what we were Start repeating what you heard soon you’ll grow to love the words see the lion kill the bird use your pen to draw a sword you’ve become a walking war Drowning in your history scared of what you want to be the future is a mystery the punch line is infinity forever out in front of me

POP THE REINS Hit stop when I hear you talk what you see and say got no relation Turn white, I been up all night and I still can't find your imagination, sir There's nothing real you've got to fear just slip the noose and rock the cage I'll get away There's nothing real you've got to fear just kick your boots and pop the reins And now I think I know what your mother meant that everybody works for the government If we don't find a way to pay the rent I'll say what they want me to say C'mon yeah right, yeah right Everybody gets a shot tonight Everybody step into the light Oh wait, no we made a mistake Duck dive, gotta stay alive hit 'em one, two, three with the combination Came back with a new attack and that's all she wrote for your generation, son There's nothing real you've got to fear just slip the noose and rock the cage I'll get away There's nothing real you've got to fear just kick your boots and pop the reins And now I think I know what your mother meant that everybody works for the government If we don't find a way to pay the rent I'll say what they want me to say C'mon yeah right, yeah right Everybody gets a shot tonight Everybody slide into the light Oh great, now the baby's awake It's not the truth, it's not a lie It's just a lullaby

FALLING BEHIND IN THE GAME You've been in my nightmares what do you know It wasn't that easy watching you go And mostly I'm fighting invisible things The enemy general pulling the enemy strings I'm just a house I'm just a cow swirling around in this tornado What's a tornado And what do you do when you're not in love you're not in luck you're not in style you're not in time What do you do Don't feel ashamed if you're falling behind in the game It's just chess it's just poker it's just twister I'm always surrounded by beautiful things sometimes I get jealous and I wanna just cave 'em all in And I try not to worry too much of the time watching these assholes trying to cut me in line 'cause they're just a dot right next to a dot in front of a dot times ten times infinity What's an infinity And what do you do when you're not in love you're not in luck you're not in style you're not in time What do you do Don't feel ashamed if you're falling behind in the game It's just chess it's just poker it's just twister My late great youth watch over me The late great truth wash over me

KICK 'EM OUT I could never pay this debt I owe I don't have a reason to stay and so I'm leaving I'll be glad to go Yesterday the sky turned black and blue busted into showers rained for seven hours on a mile of road Tomorrow says believe me but I won't Drinking with the TV, saying "No one gets in, I win" But even if you make a brand new start you can't really kick 'em out of your heart Even if you trade light for dark you don't really kick 'em out Been so many days now in a row and I don't like the spaces between the celebrations It's just the same old show So right away she takes off all her clothes still the only currency she knows and she won't leave no matter what you tell her and you don't see no matter what she shows But even if she can't find the spark you don't really kick her out of your heart Even if you're better off apart you can't really kick her out Oh, you make this room a better place so I pledge allegiance to your face Oh no, where'd you go? Even if you make a brand new start you don't really kick 'em out of your heart Even if you trade light for dark you can't find the spark you're better off apart Even if you make a brand new start you don't really kick 'em out
